How to Reset a Skoda Key

I just received a message that my infotainment unit was low on battery and has to be replaced. It's not the first time, and last time I visited an dealer, they replaced it for free, took about 2 mins and said it would work once more.

The EEPROM Method

If your car key stops working, it may take a while for a professional to reprogram it. In many cases, this means taking a look at the EEPROM to locate the unique code for that specific car. This is a risky process because there's a high possibility that the information stored in the module will be corrupted. It's best to delegate this task to a professional locksmith.

An EEPROM is a non-volatile memory utilized in various electronic devices, such as keys for cars. It stores data, including the unique encryption keys or authentication codes that are recognized by your car when you use the key to unlock or start it. These codes are crucial because they notify the car that you have the right key and are authorised to drive it.

If your EEPROM is damaged, the keys will cease to function.  TheKeyLab  is typically caused by using the wrong key, or accidentally hitting one of the buttons. You can try to reset it using a special tool, however, this isn't certain to work. It is best to work with an expert with years of experience in programming automotive keys.

To reset your EEPROM you must first remove the Kessy module from the vehicle. It is located above the accelerator pedal, on the left-hand side of the vehicle. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the single plastic clip holding it in the position. After that, you can unplug the two electrical connectors and pull it out of the vehicle. You can then read the EEPROM by using a SOIC8 and micro pincers that are connected to a programmer. Once you have all the information you are able to save the file and write it back into the EEPROM.

To read the EEPROM data, use a program like PonyProg and click Read Device. The EEPROM dump will appear as a hex array of characters. There are three hex values including the KEY_CODE key_count and the V_ARG_ENABLED. To "virginize" the chip, change all other hex values starting with 00. Once you have done this you can flash the chip to restore its functionality.

Ignition Method

This method uses another key to activate the car's system. It's not applicable to all vehicles, however it is possible to reset the key fob in case it's not functioning properly or the battery is dying. It should also work if the buttons have been repeatedly pressed (a frequent cause is people trying to press down the unlock button multiple times).

This method requires you to turn on the ignition and leave it on. Then, lock the car's drivers door with another key. Then, rotate the key fob back to its lock position and point at the transmission receiver located in the front of the car above the mirror. Press and hold the unlock button for a couple of seconds. The horn will sound and the key fob will start working.

If the skoda key is not working, the transmitter inside may have been damaged or unsynchronized with the vehicle's anti-theft system. If this is the situation, it needs to be reset. A technician or automotive locksmith can help you with this.

If you've purchased an electronic remote control but it isn't working in your vehicle, the seller might not have programmed it to work with your vehicle. It could also be that the battery terminals have become loose. They may appear to be loose and then soldered into. Soldering them back into place should restore your key fob's full functionality. If you're unsure about this kind of repair, consult an expert auto technician.

Switch ignition OFF, and then lock the vehicle from within with a second key that is not compatible (this will reset the memory position 1). Enter channel "01" (may be channel "21" in certain Audi models). Insert the new key fob into the door to the driver's side and press its unlock button twice in 5 seconds (often enough to reach the next available memory position).

Repeat this coding procedure for up to 4 additional remote controls. Make sure to shut off the ignition between programming each remote. You should hear a chime each time you successfully code the remote.
